Solid historical mystery with excellent use of real figures and events to enhance the narrative.

Ok, I'm so glad I discovered Ray Celestin this year! His books completely suck me in.
I love how he makes his books as historically correct as he can. I love how each book has a theme, a season and a song. He just has a way with words that completely enthralls me.

His writing is so gritty and honest, and you just care for his characters. I loved all the snippets of Chicago's history that was in this book. I felt the heat of the sun. I loved the gangsters and seeing Al Capone's relationship with Louis Armstrong.
Whilst I wasn't as invested in this particular investigation, as I was with the one in The Axeman's Jazz, I still connected with the characters and my heart broke for them. For Ida. For Jacob. For Dante. Even for Chuck.
I was so mad at Ray Celestin for breaking Ida's heart like he did. It broke mine too. I couldn't believe that happened, I was all in for their happy ever after.
And Dante. Oh Dante you poor broken man. I do hope he gets his happy ever after. Ray's characters feel so real, I just want them to be ok

This book has been a much anticipated read for me having loved The Axeman's Jazz! The characters in this are superb and along with the cultural atmosphere they make up the majority of this series' appeal to me. Ida in particular really grows into her own this time around and I enjoyed every minute of the again intertwining stories Celestin builds and develops.

I did think this book was lacking in atmosphere when compared to its predecessor: while still packed with '20s air and jazz, I didn't get the same constant rhythm throughout for some reason. While not supremely noticeable, this jankiness did slightly affect my perception of the story and thus my rating. Do not be fooled though: I still adored this and would recommend to lovers of mystery murders and '20s historical fiction.
