Emezi has done such a great job with world building and the political metaphors in Bitter and Pet. I need to read her whole catalog

a perfect prequel to Pet!! the characters were well-rounded enough to serve as a stand-alone story, while still painting such an intense image of what life was like before Pet took place. and with this book, i’ve read every book Akwaeke Emezi has published!! we love to see it ❤️

This is a prequel to Emezi’s Pet. It expanded the world in Pet, but was thematically unique, which was great. Protest, resistance, nonviolent or violent struggle for equality. Bitter uses her artistic powers for the resistance. I really enjoyed the examination of art as protest/ resistance. This was heavy handed and repetitive at times.
