The excitement in this book is subtle, having to do with the main character being forced out of her biological family but into a new, much better one. The traditional nemesis on Pern (Thread, and craven Holders) are merely in the background, but that allows other aspects of Pern to be explored.

I love McCaffrey’s dragon books ☺️ this one was more of a novella but still very good. Makes you wish you could have a fire lizard of your own. A dog is pretty close though. Mine eats my food and sits on my shoulder anyway.

This is my mom's favorite book. She's tried to get me to read it for years. I was always interested; I loved what she had told me about the world and how people interacted with dragons. I just never felt motivated to actually pick it up. This year, my mom became so adamant that I read it that I finally prioritized it and I'm SO HAPPY that I did. I absolutely adore this book. I love Menolly. It was hard to read the beginning of this book, and see how horribly her parents treated her. When she finally arrived at the Weyr and was treated kindly and felt like she belonged and everyone was so kind, I almost cried. The story came around in such a lovely way and it felt so rewarding to see Menolly's story have a happy ending. I can't wait to see where Menolly's story goes from here and reas the rest of the Pern books. I definitely started them way too late, but I'm just happy I finally did read them. Better late than never, as they say.
This was a reread for me! Still one of my favorite series from when I was younger!
