I have a good amount of nostalgia connected to this book, but still. Menolly is such a great protagonist. Seeing the way she deals with each conflict as it arises is so cool, and I love seeing her grow throughout the book.

I've been getting back into the fantasy novels I read as a child. The Harper Hall trilogy was one of my favorites. I had never gone back to read it because of the awfully silly looking covers. But this is an excellent case of not judging a book by its cover.

I've finished the first one, and it was delightful. A great story with strong characters. The world Menolly (our heroine) lives on is described with such detail that you can not only see the place in your mind's eye, but you can smell it and even taste it.

I haven't read any of Anne McCaffrey's books beyond this trilogy, so I can't say what sort of writer she is overall. But, for the upper intermediate / young adult age reader these books are fine pieces of literature that should be looked upon as classics.

Continuing my romp through Pern - mostly I just reread Dragonsinger... I read this aloud to the kids years ago. I was actually fairly surprised on this reread - I liked it more than I remembered.

A twist on the Dragon series with another strong female character.
Obviously playing off the middle ages and guilds, but still very enjoyable.

I initially read this book as summer reading my sophomore year of high school and I remember enjoying it then. This time, I picked it off our shelf late one night because it was slight and I was having trouble sleeping. I am so glad I did! It's such a wonderful little book and I liked Menolly just as much now as I did when I was a teen girl. Now I'd like to finish the rest of the series.

Great book, but my teacher didn't like my book report.
