Loved it! This is the first McCaffrey book I've read. I always feel more relaxed after reading this book. The writing just has a comforting feel to it. It is a great coming of age adventure for the main character Menolly and it so satisfying to see her get a happy ending. I only have one complaint and that is Menolly is a bit of a Mary Sue. She lacks any significant flaws that would give her character more depth and layers. So I hope this can be explored more in the next two books. Otherwise, love the story and world itself

Much less brutal sexism than the Dragonriders of Pern. There's still the element of girls not being as good as boys, but in this story it makes sense and is part of who the main character is. The book feels short and like it ends right as the story is getting good. It would probably have worked just fine combined with the next one in the series. It's been fun reliving the memories of reading these as a kid!

Still a great book that I remenber from my childhood
It's been over 10 years since I last read Dragonsong. I remembered it being much longer and harder to read, but perhaps I just didn't have the patience I do now.
As other reviewers have mentioned, this book probably makes more sense within the context of other Pern novels, but I also feel that it's fine as a standalone. Sometimes it's better to be immersed in a story even when all the elements aren't explained. The lack of explanation makes the references feel more organic and real.
I never made it through the entire trilogy, but I think I'm going to give it a shot. Now I just need to get my hands on the other two books...

Although I love Anne McCaffrey and the Dragonriders of Pern, "Dragonsong" combines the worst parts of a series that sometimes ends with everybody happy and friends. The book telegraphs all of the action and takes a long time to get there.
By far the best and most exhilirating parts of the book where those in which the normally insufferable Menolly had to fight for her survival in the wild.
