Just reread this, as Harold has begun reading it to the girls. It's still good.
Very sweet. A good book if your feeling a little sad and just want something to make you smile:)

The opposite of how I want my dragons. And McCaffrey really needs to learn to keep her kinks under control.
Three and a half stars. This was one of my favorites when I was about 13 or so, and I was kind of surprised it held up as well as it did. It's on that border between middle grade and YA, but other than the 80s-tastic cover, and the slightly less sophisticated style, it didn't feel that dated. There were some references to events that made more sense if you're familiar with [b:The Dragonriders of Pern|61942|The Dragonriders of Pern (Dragonriders of Pern, #1-3)|Anne McCaffrey|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1348984331l/61942._SY75_.jpg|6614581], but it stood pretty well on its own.
I still found Menolly a sympathetic and likable character, and the story fits well into the "abused/neglected/misunderstood child runs off and is introduced to a wider, fantastical world" genre. I enjoyed revisiting this one, and shall continue on to see how its sequel stands the test of time.

I think I've read this previously, but it is a lovely soft children's story.
