Life on Pern is scary and isolating with Thread falling. Menolly is 15 and she knows that she loves music and creativity and she wants to be a Harper but she lives in Half Circle Sea Hold which is halfway to nowhere and her father the Seaholder believes it is shameful that she wants music and more.
When music is denied her, Menolly keeps to herself more and more. That's how she sees fire lizards, the mythical creatures that were the ancestors of Perns great Dragons. A secret she keeps to herself, even after she helps rescue a clutch of eggs.
Like Menolly, I was 15 the first time I read this book. It had such a profound impact on me. It was my gateway to the world of Pern. I love the world and the series, but this is not just my favorite book. I believe it is the best in the series. Some of that is that Menolly is probably the most relateable person on the planet.
I love so many characters, but Menolly is the one anyone could be. She faces the same adversity many of us do - parents who don't understand her, sibling rivalry, self-doubt, loss, adolescence, just plain feeling different from everyone around her. But she is a good person, capable of compassion and empathy. She wants to do what's right, but she recognizes that she needs to do what's right for herself.
She is confronted with challenge after challenge. She is put into new situations and faces new people. She handles what is thrown at her and does what she can. She is who I want to be even now.

Love Anne McCaffrey she has such a wonderful, boundless imagination and such a vivid and descriptive style, her stories transport the reader into the fantastic world that she created and sweeps you up on the breathtaking adventures. Wonderful!
I had forgotten how sweet a character Menolly is - and how disturbing her parents' behavior was. May be triggering in regards to child abuse and controlling rigid parents.
One of my favorites, I go back to it and it's sequel [b:Dragonsinger|28547|Dragonsinger|Anne McCaffrey|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1288639051s/28547.jpg|2971170] again and again.

No love here, the main character was just way too passive. Maybe I started with the wrong book in the series.
