This book really awakened my thoughts to the quickening inevitability of the technological corruption of humans.
Loved the premise. It is completely within the realm of possibility that a tech company will someday take over the world, and that people will let it happen happily. Have you heard of WeWork? The parallels are uncanny. And yet, there was something severely lacking, or maybe something severely overdescriptive? The main character was awful. She was pretty two dimensional - I didn't feel like I knew her or her motivations at all. She was incredibly mean and malleable and it would have been nice to maybe know why. There was also just way too much time spent on mundane descriptions of the day to day and random things that didn't matter. The book probably could have been one third less long than it was. The "sex" scenes were also so strange. Please, Eggers, never talk about a crown entering someone ever again.
Talk about over-sharing.
This should be sub-titled "Rise of the Planet of 1984."

Relevant social commentary, satire. Totally relatable.
This was a fun read. It's like an episode of Black Mirror. Some of the character progression is a bit eye roll inducing. It also seemed to be a lot of build up to get to the end, so once you finally get there, it's a tad underwhelming - but I still enjoyed it quite a bit.
This was published in 2013. Eight years ago. It was oddly prescient...which is why everyone needs to read good science and speculative fiction.
Confronterende fictie, leest als een trein.

Rounding up a 3.5 to 4 stars - I can't stop thinking about this, and my relationship with social media. I just 'gave my delivery person a compliment' and I can't help but see the parallel.
If you want to go down the rabbit hole of "what would happen if Google took over the world?" then read this. It could have been edited down more, but I found it fascinating and freaky.
This was a hard book to get through. I stopped and started it many times. The characters weren't likable and I had a difficult connecting with anyone in the story to make me want to finish it.
The ending was maybe the only thing to make it worth it.
