Yeah, I’m not going to continue this series… I spent the entirety of this book constantly thinking I was missing something because of how often it jumped around and skipped over key formative moments. Usually the problem I come up against a lot when reading is that authors don’t trust their readers to read between the lines and so things are overwritten and over-explained. This book had the opposite problem. I don’t know if Katee Robert trusted me too much or simply didn’t put the work in to develop the plot, which meant that I had no clue what was going on a lot of the time and I felt like I was constantly finding plot holes. For example, if everyone who lands in Threshold is drafted into the Cwn Annwn, then how are there islands with towns and people? Wouldn’t they all be on these ships and forced to fight monsters because they’re in Threshold? Anyway, let’s talk characters. I’ve already forgotten their names and I finished this book two minutes ago - always a good sign. Bowen and Evelyn weren’t fully developed characters. They had passion and lust, but that was about it. There was no delving into the grief after the loss of Evelyn and Bowen’s respective families. There was no exploration of this amnesia that Bowen seemed to have of his past life. There was certainly no relationship development between the two of them. They even made a point to say in the story that they were surprised by falling in love after about two days together - you and me both, guys! It was the epitome of insta love and completely lust-fuelled. It meant that when the smut came around, I simply didn’t care. As for the writing, it felt like the writer was trying too hard to be funny or conversational - I don’t even know how to describe what the problem was, it was just an awkwardly written story. There was a lot of almost breaking the fourth wall moments that made no sense. There was also this crazy focus on describing every character first by their level of attractiveness, with no care for any other character trait. As for the plot? It was simple and an incredibly overdone plot in fantasy. A group of people come together to discover that the powers that be aren’t actually that great, so they fight them. There’s honestly no further description of the plot needed. So why did I give this 2 stars when it’s clear I’m describing it as a 1 star read? Because it was compulsively readable. I don’t think it was good, but it didn’t piss me off. So 2 stars and a series DNF. Now I’m questioning if I should read any of the other three Katee Robert books I own…

Katee Robert has been on my TBR for a while, and I'm so glad I started reading her with Hunt on Dark Waters. I devoured this book. It was captivating from page one, and not only because of how spicy it is.

Evelyn is not the typical heroine. She's more like a villain, so when the vampire she was in a situation ship with dumps her, Evelyn takes the dumb decision to steal from her, and in her attempt to escape ends up in a different world. Here, she's forced to join a crew of pirates until monsters. But witches are considered monsters by many too in this world, so she needs to behave. Funny, isn't it? Evelyn behaving? So she does the only logical thing. She tries to escape and find a way back home. But Bowen, the captain of the pirate ship, won't let her. Thankfully Evelyn can start showing him the truth of what's going on in this world, and things aren't all black or white has he was made to believe. And now they are ready for a revolution.

A fun, frisky frolic on the high seas.
Feisty thieving bi witch & a broody good hearted big boy pirate become rebels with a cause who bang a lot.
Main take away is - who are the real monsters.
Will continue the series
