This book is long, but so so so good. I highly recommend listening to it in the care while Levar Burton narrates. It’s like all these amazing parts of childhood tied together with the story of an authentic man who’s life mission was kindness and the education and protection of goodness. Get off your booty and get this book on Audible!

PS I highly recommend this for long drives. It’s relaxing and calming.

Mr. Rogers has always been a favorite of mine, so even though this was slow at times (I ended up listening at 1.75) this was a very good read. His calm, gentle manner, dedication to children and kindness to everyone are life goals.

The concept of Freddish was one of my favorite parts of this book.
Anticipating a misunderstanding and then preventing that misunderstanding by removing all barriers and possible miscommunication.

1. “State the idea you wish to express as clearly as possible, and in terms preschoolers can understand.” Example: It is dangerous to play in the street.
2. “Rephrase in a positive manner,” as in It is good to play where it is safe.
3. “Rephrase the idea, bearing in mind that preschoolers cannot yet make subtle distinctions and need to be redirected to authorities they trust.” As in, “Ask your parents where it is safe to play.”
4. “Rephrase your idea to eliminate all elements that could be considered prescriptive, directive, or instructive.” In the example, that’d mean getting rid of “ask”: Your parents will tell you where it is safe to play.
5. “Rephrase any element that suggests certainty.” That’d be “will”: Your parents can tell you where it is safe to play.
6. “Rephrase your idea to eliminate any element that may not apply to all children.” Not all children know their parents, so: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play.
7. “Add a simple motivational idea that gives preschoolers a reason to follow your advice.” Perhaps: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. It is good to listen to them.
8. “Rephrase your new statement, repeating the first step.” “Good” represents a value judgment, so: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. It is important to try to listen to them.
9. “Rephrase your idea a final time, relating it to some phase of development a preschooler can understand.” Maybe: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. It is important to try to listen to them, and listening is an important part of growing.

I also love his quote and mother’s advice when things are scary or difficult to “Look for the helpers. You’ll always find people who are helping.”

& if you can’t find a helper, be one.

I preface this by saying I am someone who used to read the encyclopedia for fun.... It is very rare for a book to take me sooooo long to get through. There was sooo much information and a lot of it was repetitive. I wonder if that was a deliberate choice to attempt to bring the reader to “Fred time” or if a better editor was needed....
However, as a teacher, I found this book priceless. I think ever early childhood and childhood educator could use the insight this biography offers. Sometimes, it’s more important than we could ever know to slow down. I feel the pace of my classroom getting faster and faster every year as little guys are exposed to more and more rapid stimulation. And this is an amazing reminder not just of the life of Mr. Rogers but of his educational philosophy.

Mr. Rogers was a fascinating and compassionate person! I loved learning about him. I cried near the end

Mister Rogers led such a fascinating life and this was a great book. 4 stars because the storytelling was non-linear and a bit repetitive at times.
