I wasn't sure how to rate this book at first, but overall, thinking back on it.....I have to give it 5 stars. Some parts of the book went into such great detail the readers get to know so much about Mister Rogers - his family background, his childhood and everyone who surrounded him making & shaping him into the person he was. And he was an incredible person for sure.
Mister Rogers was a staple in my childhood. I just LOVED him. I looked forward to his show each day. I loved experiencing the land of make believe. While Henrietta Pussycat (meow meow) was my absolute favorite, I knew every single character & their personalities all made the land of make believe what it was. It was interesting to read how they evolved and came into being.
Mister Rogers was a genius in my opinion. Here I sit, at almost 44 years old, reliving my childhood through memories of his show. And I think he'd be proud of that.
Parts of this book, as the reader, I thought were drawn out, they gave so many details to everyone who surrounded Mister Rogers and I felt like - I wanted to read about him, not everyone else - but then as I continued, I realized THAT is what Mister Rogers was about - others. And so reading about people's thoughts about him & how he made them feel, gave a much deeper understanding of who Mister Rogers was & what type of work he was doing.
He really is one of a kind. I admit to ugly crying at the end of his book. He was quoted from a PBS special released a few months before his death saying, "I would like to tell you what I often told you when you were much younger. I like you just the way you are. And what's more, I'm so grateful to you for helping the children in your life to know that you'll do everything you can to keep them safe. And to help them express their feelings in ways that will bring healing in many different neighborhoods. It's such a good feeling to know that we're lifelong friends."
I had no idea just how much Mister Rogers influenced me in my life until I read this book & realized we have so much in common. And I know that it's such a happy feeling to know that even now....Im still growing inside! I think I'll make a snappy new day! Thank you Mister Rogers for your gifts to the world.
One other thing I will leave in this review. Take time with this book. Don't rush through it. Absorb it. You'll appreciate it more.

I love Mr. Rodgers, but this biography was very boring. The beginning about his youth and learning about his family was great. About halfway, it started to get bogged down with facts and lost something that made it approcahble. It wasn't able to hold my attention.
If you don't mind a dry biography, the audio is narrated by Levar Burton which was great.

One of the highlights of winter break has been having the time to devote to this wonderful book. I was not disappointed—I learned a lot that I didn’t know. I continue to be grateful to have had such an inspiring role model.
A slow-paced biography of the man whom many of today's adults grew up with, I found surprises in the story of Fred Rogers's life of which I never knew. An admirable, compassionate teacher, Rogers's legacy will be forever fossilized in this book.
There are definitely gems worth reading in this book, but overall I felt it was hard to read it all the way through. I was most interested in his philosophy of teaching young children. I didn't love his show as a child, but I appreciate it more now.
Illuminating biography of a highly influential man in my young life whom I respect and admire so much more as an adult. A thorough look at Fred Rogers’ life from childhood to young adult to “Mister Rogers” and everything between and after. Read by the inimitable Levar Burton. Worth every second.
If you've been missing Mr. Rogers since you last saw him, you'll be delighted to learn that you can find him here in the pages of this book, emanating encouragement from every chapter, just like you remember.
Kudos to Maxwell King for deciding to put this work together! I found "The Good Neighbor" to be thoroughly enjoyable from cover to cover. This book is so emotionally charged (in a good way) that I found myself smiling many times as I read the accounts of the life of a person I was very glad to learn was exactly whom he presented himself to be. One of my favorite parts of this book was how the song "It's You I Like" is interwoven within the story, making multiple appearances at just the right times and serving as an appropriate legacy to the man who brought so much joy to so many people.
There's no reason to skip this one. This is an excellent work that is worthy of all the positive accolades it will receive. Don't miss it!

Such a lovely tribute to the most special person. I loved this book from the moment I turned it on and the theme song played. LeVar was the perfect narrator. I learned a lot of fun things about Mr. Rogers, like his affinity for the number 143. I love him all the more now, and I'm feeling very inspired to work hard to be more like him in my interactions with everyone I meet.
The only reason a star is missing is the repetition from chapter to chapter. Certain details only need to be shared once.
I would recommend this book to anyone who's ever been to Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.

I just couldn't. I got about 20% into it and had a toothache from how sickly sweet it was. I didn't grow up with Mr. Rogers so maybe that's why I havent joined the cult. I admit that I don't get the way people worship him. He seems kind of creepy to me and this book didn't improve that perception
It's long and slow.. 😭 it's interesting, but my life is so crazy, I need something that pulls me back to the page.
