mr rogers was just as good as he was on tv.
i loved the later chapters of the book about swimming and about
his legacy. the ending quote was perfectly placed.

And I think I’d like that because there are many significant people in my life that I have lost through death, and I’d like to be able to talk to them again, and tell them some things that I wasn’t able to tell them then. In fact, I’d like to be able to tell them, you are special.
i had never read about his struggles as a creator and it shocked me and made him so real to me to read this note he wrote to himself:
“Am I kidding myself that I’m able to write a script again? Am I really just whistling Dixie? I wonder. Why don’t I trust myself? Really that’s what it’s all about… that and not wanting to go through the agony of creation. AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, IT’S JUST AS BAD AS EVER. I wonder if every creative artist goes through the tortured of the damned trying to create? GET TO IT, FRED! But don’t let anybody ever tell anybody else that it was easy. It wasn’t.”

"The Good Neighbor" is a must-read for anyone who has ever held an interest in the life of Fred Rogers. This book does a deep dive into Rogers' history, as well as the history of children's television, his relationships with other people, his passions, and his influences.
The important message I took away from this book was that Mr. Rogers was the real deal, and as genuine a person as he seemed. What was also worth noting is that he was a real person with doubts and flaws, but those only served to humanize him and remind me that living like Mr. Rogers and sharing his message is an attainable goal.

DNF - repetitive, mundane writing style. I'll attempt finishing at a later date.
I got so angry at the first chapter about FR's brilliant mother trying to fit herself into the shitty society that told her she couldn't be a doctor. I had to stop reading.
