as queer people today, we should read books like this to understand our community's history (and present; conversion camps and therapies are still rife). there are moments where the camp appears fun and lighthearted but the seriousness of what those kids are going through hits out of nowhere and bought me to tears. cameron and her friends have to make the most of their situation to survive and that is made clear. they dont have any other options as they are being torn down and made to hate themselves.
Graphic: Religious bigotry, Death of parent, Lesbophobia, Emotional abuse, Outing, Self harm, Drug use, Forced institutionalization, Hate crime, Homophobia, and Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Sexual harassment, Sexual content, Sexism, and Car accident

Grieving, lonely, curious and troublesome we spend the Summer with Cameron as she explores her sexuality, much to the chagrin of her conservative and religious family and community.
While this book could have gone so many directions with this story, it was a Bildungsroman that stayed true to the genre. Despite the circumstances she later finds herself in, surprisingly, Cameron is finally able to define for herself her identity and who she is without the judgment from her community and family.
I wish the book tied up certain storylines and situations better, although the ending tried to be hopefully and reflective of the journey Cameron had been on/ was still going on, I wish it explored the “what happens next” further.
I can’t say I enjoyed reading, but more like I didn’t mind reading it to pass the time.
