Great start to a series

This series came highly recommended from a fellow book. It does not disappoint. I was distraught by the first fourth (ish) of the book, however the sequence of events totally grew on me and I love it. I can’t wait to read about what happens next to Zoey, Ryker, and Sprig! Overall a well written, fast-paced story with lovable characters.

It's going to be a short and sweet review. Basically everything that annoyed the crap out of me from the first book it was like she heard and fixed everything. I absolutely love both the main and the side characters of this book. Both of them have experienced trauma and the way that they are dealing with it seems so realistic. Their personalities, the way the effects of their trauma are manifesting is just so well written. I also really like the fact that it starts out that yes they hate each other because of the whole different races and it's not an automatic switch from hate to love. You can see as things progress in the story how the relationship progresses and how also you can tell they're conflicted by these new and different feelings they have for each other. They go from hitting each other to reluctantly accepting that they have to work together to reach their end goal to actually becoming somewhat friends and learning to trust and rely on each other and then as the book is ending you can see that it's building up to more but again they are conflicted with all of that which is so realistic and natural and what it should be. Honestly it's like this book was written by a completely different author than the first series. Also I have to mention the side character of sprig because he is just absolutely phenomenal and hilarious and I need a whole book of just sprig comments and observations because it is that amazing.

This is an exceptionally exciting ride. From the first page the reader is thrown into a battle of good vs. evil. Zoey is a member of the DMG, a secret government service helping capture and collect the evil Fae from the streets of Seattle. She thinks she's on the good side, she thinks she's helping find a cure for the dibilitating diseases that plague the human race. But she may be fighting for the wrong team. In one terrible night Zoey loses everything that matters to her and gains a sidekick she'd love to loose. Ryker must keep Zoey safe. The tension between the two is palpable. They are constantly chased and forced to battle for survival. I found a few inconsistencies in the story that left me irriataed, but overall I completely enjoyed the ride.

This book is pretty heavy, dark, and carries a certain tone throughout. If you’re looking for a steamy urban fantasy read, this will not be for you.

But. It is fantastic in what it sets out to do.

The story follows Zoey, who is a damaged, dark character trying to turn her life around. She is also amazing. A fighter through and through and someone I wanted to succeed given the horrors she’s endured.

I loved most of her reactions and survivalism through the story as it moved between magic and enduring hardship. Zoey faces some true trials as she copes with conspiracy and the truth about who and what she is.

There is a romance element involved or growing in the form of Ryker, who I really struggled with until they end. Sure he’s hot, but he was such a jerk through most of the book that I found it very hard to connect with and care about him.

The action and pacing are solid and I never felt bored or uninterested. This wasn’t at all what I expected and I would be interested in seeing where it all winds up in the future. Great for anyone who loves really dark urban fantasy!

Reading some old books on my TBR. I liked this book, but don’t think it’s interesting enough to continue the series.

Things I liked:
  1. Tragedy happens. It’s not all unicorns and rainbows.
  2. Monkey fae sprite

Things I didn’t like:
  1. The constant one liners of angst
  2. Zoey is really good at so many things
  3. I don’t really care if Ryker gets his powers back

This is a solid 3.5 stars. I enjoyed the storyline overall but the first 1/2 drug on and on and on. There was way too much wandering around without any real purpose to what they were doing. The city is destroyed, she has this fae guy's powers, and they literally have no plans. I was sure Ryker had some sort of connections but nope. There was no plan for a million years.

I also felt like there were way too many coincidences. Like magically she decides to go to Daniel's apartment. Then she magically takes the one book she needs. Then she figures out the code. Then Daniel knows a guy who can tell them where the key was from.

I did appreciate the when Zoey got kidnapped because it finally started to move the story along! I enjoyed her bloodthirsty fighter side! I also loved how Ryder didn't give a shit she almost killed someone. He was just cool with it.

I can't wait to find out more about Zoey in the next book and what it means for her future to be an experiment. I also find it interesting Ryker is concerned about his powers choosing her.
I did feel like a lot of the book read too much like Savage Lands.

I was so annoyed by the talking monkey. I hated his character.
