The story itself I can deal with. My main problem was the book or copy I read had no chapters. There were some journal entries midway through the book but the rest was one very long narrative.
I realize this is suppose to be Robinson Crusoe telling his tale to some unsuspecting soul who didn't know what he was in for but as a reader, 300 pages of looking for a break or development in the storyline to place my bookmark was not enjoyable.

I’m a little disappointed in my teachers for describing this as the first novel, when it’s not even the first European novel, let alone the first in general. But nevertheless it’s a very interesting read, being a historic novel that is itself a historical novel. I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would (the English classics and I have an uneasy relationship), and was especially struck by descriptions of the natural world, human ingenuity, and social issues of the time period (many of which are still relevant today).
I strongly advise anyone considering reading this to pick up the full version instead. The abridged version is fine enough, but many of the things it cuts out are integral to the purpose of reading Robinson Crusoe in the modern day. The most interesting things about this story have little to do with the plot, but provide insights into early capitalism, colonialism, and the narrative of Black cannibals living on desert islands, brought into civilisation only by white explorers. In stripping down the story to the bare bones of its plot, most of these elements are lost.
