I think Lackey does an excellent job of keeping the feel of her books the same, while also changing alot with the settings and situations. This book is much more adventure and survival focused than the last but still hits all the emotional points it needed too. I just enjoy the character forward focus of her books.

Didn't enjoy it as much as the 1st.
Talking about it with others, I put much of my problems with it on the "This was like, the 1st series to have a female lead & be Feminist Fantasy," and yeah, there are some weird issues, not bad, just... current year 2019 Feminism as opposed to trying to see how to make it work back in the 80's.
Still good, don't expect "Harry Potter but less problematic."
While the 1st book's main conflict was based on politics, with a background conflict around sex at one point, the 2nd book flips that around and that's just not my cup of tea. The first book was about Talia overcoming external issues and learning to accept help from others, 2nd book is more about her learning more about herself & to control abilities, with some external help, but very much everything the 1st book did, flipped on it's head, and this makes me feel like she was trying to do what Earthsea did in it's 4th book, kind of flipping audience expectations on its head, but without meaning to.
Still looking forward to the 3rd book, hope there's less sex in it.

I’m not entirely satisfied with the way Talia’s Gift was handled. I liked how she lost control and Kris had to teacher her grounding and centering. However, when she appears to actually get a hold of the Gift it feels glossed over. I hope the next book continues to explore her difficulties with controlling it.

I still enjoy the writing style of this author. The middle definitely dragged on and it wasn’t very action packed. But it was fun watching Talia slowly grow and become ready to face the court.
