“Like calls to like.” - shadow and bone.

Wow, this book absolutely blew me away. I’ve seen so many mixed reviews and I really didn’t expect to like it so much. The Darkling and I have a bit of a love hate relationship but I have to say he is such a well written villain. Mal is not totally unlikable in this book, but he did get on my nerves a few times especially when he was acting like he was entitled to Alina.

My only wish is that I was Leigh had spent more time explaining the Grisha and their powers. It got confusing at the start and its so important to the story that it almost seems like it was glazed over.

I will buy and read anything Leigh Bardugo writes. She is so amazing and this world she has created is beautiful.

It was an enjoyable read and I was left surprised at the fast pace in the beginning of it. However, the timing in this book turns out to be a bit odd. In reality this book moves quickly but there is awhile where you feel as if the character is stuck in the same routine forever. Only to find out it wasn't very long at all in the scheme of things. It had all of the fantasy world building you could want but I personally found it wasn't very attention grabbing. Overall it was a mediocre read but I will be finishing the series.
I found the Darling to be really disgusting and some of the things he did to Alina and their world unforgiveable. I don't see how anyone could wish them to be together. I highly doubt anything that will come up in the next books will redeem him for me.

My main thought going into this book, is "what is the author gonna do with 240 pages??" I'm so used to fantasy being 400+ so I was really interested in seeing what could happen, and I'm proud to say that it did really well! I stayed up till 6am finishing this book, I couldn't put it down cuz I was at edge of my seat with those last 50 pages. I was so stressed for this one character I didn't even know I loved that much. Alina did feel I bit stereotypical to me, she's still likeable but I feel like maybe she could've been better? I don't know, but I enjoyed the book, it's an easy read! Can't wait to see this in live action~

Also I think I've been cursed, cuz all of my favorite characters in these fantasy novels end up being evil and betraying me, honestly I should've seen it coming... His character is being played by Ben Barnes, I should've known he was the villain. The hints were there. This does not mean I love him any less tho🤣🤣🤣
