This was a very character driven book. The mystery, spying, and overall tension was a roller coaster ride. Intriguing characters that were well fleshed out. A male lead who isn’t afraid to acknowledge his feelings and fears. A female lead who is scared but still finds the strength to stand up for what is right and an ending that leave you wanting more.

I really liked this book! It's kind of hit and miss with the fantasy romances on Kindle Unlimited, but this one had some really fun and original concepts. Leisa owes a debt to her king, to pay it off she agrees to disguise herself as the princess to investigate the legitimacy of a marriage proposal. When she gets to this foreign court, she realizes it's a much more dangerous game than she anticipated.

Then there's the Raven, a bodyguard assigned to her by the king. He has no choice in the matter, he's been bound by magic to obey the king's every command. He doesn't have a lot of independent thinking because when he feels strong emotions, the king can feel them through their bond. Even still, he finds himself wondering about the princess who lies about who she is and switches between what is expected of her and something much stronger.

Plots with shapeshifting like this get me every time- I love it when someone's power is giving them an identity crisis it's such a great way to develop a character. Mirror mages are original and I can't wait to see how her powers develop in the future. I also like the Raven's true identity, it adds a whole additional level of intrigue. I know that's a little overdone, but I fall for it every time.

All in all, I would totally recommend reading this. It's interesting and it's short so you can stay super interested the entire time. I can't wait till the sequel is released because I'm losing my mind in anticipation.

"She tweaked death’s whiskers with a smile, and it hurt him. It hurt as nothing had hurt him in years, because she was brave and beautiful and ridiculous, and he was going to have to kill her someday."

What an amazing read! I'm obsessed.

The Faceless Mage revolves around Leisa, a guard to the princess of Farhall. Sent to the kingdom of Garimore as a spy, she comes across the masked assassin Raven, the most feared person in the Five Thrones. Leisa cannot help but be curious about him and is determined to learn his secrets. Navigating deadly plots and court intrigues, Leisa must also decipher her feelings for someone who is supposed to be an enemy.

I couldn't put this book down once I started reading. I devoured it in less than a day and I can't wait to pick up the sequel. Leisa is one of my favourite female protagonists. She is practical, smart, considerate and the right amount of sarcastic. I liked the fact that she didn't jump head first into sacrificing herself, which made her more believable.
Raven was an interesting character with a lot of inner conflict. I liked his intensity and protective nature. I want to see how both Raven and Leisa get along in the coming books.
All the characters were so well written, including the supporting ones and the villains.
The world building, though not very detailed, was great.
This book had slow burn and enemies to lovers romance which are two of my favourite tropes in romantic fantasy.
This was such a fast paced, full of excitement kinda novel. There wasn't a single moment that I felt distracted, it had me hooked completely.
I recommend this to all fantasy lovers.

Excellent start to this series! Kenley Davidson has created a fascinating magic system in a world of political intrigue. The hero in particular was compelling and complex. This is definitely a slow burn romance, but the groundwork has been laid for the hero & heroine’s relationship. Looking forward to book two!

Well this book was an unexpected, delightful treat!

He would have wagered there was nothing fragile or harmless about her, but there was no one to wager with. And in any case, he had no plans to share his observations. No one cared what he saw or what he thought. He was mute judgment made flesh, and he did only what his master commanded.

The King's Raven is the mysterious, taciturn personal bodyguard of King Melger. Despite his aloof and morose demeanor, he positively inspires curiosity. From the few glimpses we're given into his mind, he surely has a most tantalizing history and I need to know more! He is most perplexing and there is decidedly more than meets the eye. He isn't merely full of rage and hatred, nay he is a complex tapestry of emotions that Leisa must unravel, both for her own sake and for mine.

Once, he’d had a name. Now, he was nothing. Only dark purpose. King’s Raven, cloaked in the blood and the screams of the king’s enemies.

Leisa is the captivating, exuberant bodyguard of Princess Evaraine. Despite her less than stellar childhood, she is a daring spitfire with oodles of benevolence to go around. She is highly trained and is a warrior regardless of how little others may think of her. She's here to kick ass and wear flounces, and she's all out of flounces.

The princess looked up into his mask and smiled. As if he hadn’t just threatened her life. “Yes. I will do what I must. As will you. But don’t think to tell me who I am allowed to defend, let alone how. I choose who I will care about, just as I choose which battles are mine to fight.” She tweaked death’s whiskers with a smile, and it hurt him. It hurt as nothing had hurt him in years, because she was brave and beautiful and ridiculous, and he was going to have to kill her someday. He’d intended to intimidate her. To convince her that she should treat him as an enemy. Instead, she’d somehow decided he required a defender.

I began reading this book not knowing what to expect and as the tale unfolded, it expeditiously maneuvered it's way onto my favorite's list. I find myself keen to begin the 2nd book.
