This was a very character driven book. The mystery, spying, and overall tension was a roller coaster ride. Intriguing characters that were well fleshed out. A male lead who isn’t afraid to acknowledge his feelings and fears. A female lead who is scared but still finds the strength to stand up for what is right and an ending that leave you wanting more.

The premise is interesting with some solid fantasy tropes holding it up. This does swap between 3rd and 1st person a bit randomly making the flow less than smooth. It does tend to get bogged down with inner monologues making this seem slower and longer than it really is. The story itself is engaging enough that I'm going to read the next book.

The beginning was sooooooooo painfully slow. However, I'm really glad I kept with it. The last 50 pages were definitely better and set excitement for the 2nd book.
