I love this! Leisa was put into an awful position, one she had no hope of succeeding at in my opinion, but she bravely went forward because the lives of those that didn't deserve to die would. She gets a bodyguard who once he finds everything out about her and reports to his master, will become her executioner. And the Raven himself. Caught between what he wants and what his circumstances actually are. I understood his fear of attachment and hope. Why get close if, in the end, you will only kill them anyway? And yet in 10 years, it's only Leisa he has trouble with. She is infuriatingly honest and soft-hearted and treats him as a real person. Their dynamic is interesting and caught on a blade's edge between what they want to do and what duty, and magic, make them do. I cannot wait to read more of this series and this author in general.

I LOVE this book! Such a good story with a lovely slow burn romance.
In this story we follow Leisa, a body guard to the princess of Farfall. Leisa has the ability to look into a mirror and change the way she looks and become a totally different person. So, her king tasks her with a mission to spy on the kingdom of Garimore who his daughter is to marry into to see if that is a good idea. Leisa travels to the kingdom of Garimore trying to pretend to be a diplomat and learn about the prince and the king there to see if the rumors are true about them and their adversity towards mages. While there, she meets the king’s personal bodyguard called the Raven. A deadly assassin who does anything the king requires, however, she learns there’s more to him than meets the eye, and she’s determined to find out what that is. She also starts to learn more about each kingdom, the lies she’s been told about herself and mages, and what that may mean for herself being a mage and her future.
This book had one of my favorite characters ever. Leisa is a fantastic character! She’s feisty, stubborn, tough, and has a heart of gold. She cares so much for people, no matter how awful they may be or what they’ve done, she’s willing to give them a chance to prove themselves.
And then the mystery around the Raven, I loved that. You’re trying to figure out who he is and your heart goes out to him especially when you learn what he’s been through. And all Leisa wants to do is help him, especially when she learns more about his past and his situation. See, heart of gold!
I can’t say enough how much I loved this book! The story is unique and new. The romance is a lovely slow burn. The characters are amazing(hello Prince Vaniell
