Meh, typical romance novel - interesting situations, but one dimensional characters who seem more consumed with lust than love. And too many detailed sex scenes.

I am surprised at how much I enjoyed this one. I had expected a light and fluffy read, but the author really had some meat on the bones.

This story featured a former Scot, now an American Frontiersmen fighting during colonial America times (I think French-Indian war). On one of his scouting missions he rescues a "servant" girl Anne Campbell, but soon finds out she is actually a lady. Iain begins trying to uncover why a lady would be trying to pass herself as a servant. Annie, on the other hand, is determined to keep her past a secret and continue to hide from the person after her. The problem is the closer that Iain and Annie get, the harder it is to keep the facade going. Can Annie trust the Ranger to protect her from those who mean her harm?

this story featured Native Americans, French, Scots and English. It was entertaining. I thought Kaleo G did a good job narrating the book. I got used to this female voice while listening to his female accents. A love story crafted in colonial america while navigating a war story. A good beginning to the series.

This is one of the most unique, emotional, suspenseful, and layered romances I've ever read. I've never read a romance set in colonial America before, and feel like I learned a lot about the war taking place. Iain made a wonderfully honorable hero. He was strong, courageous, a bit too quick to anger, and always recognized when he'd done something wrong. Annie was compassionate, strong, brave, and she had to grow quickly from lady to survivor. I loved the side characters of Iain's brothers and all the Rangers, and there was one side character who's one of the most layered I think I've read about.

The story started out with Annie being falsely branded a thief(literally), her being sent from Scotland to be an indentured servant in New York, and Iain saving her from a near rape. So yes. This book definitely isn't one for those who that would bother. Nearly all of the first hapchalf was about Iain and Annie surviving in the wilderness. The second followed the two as they arrived at the fort. All the while, feelings grew between the two, while battles were fought, characters plotted, and secrets were revealed. It took painfully long for some of those to come to light, and while I was frustrated, I understood the characters' actions.

This was extremely hard to put down. I think this was one of the deepest romances I've read in a long time. There was so much historical detail, some very complicated characters, and some amazing ones as well. There were villains, amazing brothers, and great friends. Among all the seriousness, there was also humor. The epilogue of this story was beautiful. I'm not likely to forget this book any time soon. Again, it's not for those of the faint of heart. There are some scenes that start out slightly questionable, but for me? This book was perfection.

Book One of MacKinnon's Rangers.

This is Iain and Annie's story. Iain is the eldest MacKinnon brother. He is forced into service in the British army by William Wentworth - one of his family's greatest enemies. When he comes across Annie in the forest, he saves her from certain death against his orders. Thus begins a romance to write home about.

Audio notes - Kaleo Griffith is a god. His use of accents is wonderful and while he differentiates between men and women, he does not try to sound like a woman.

If you're looking for a well-written, fantastically narrated story about love amongst war, this is the book for you.

Great leads, well-developed secondary characters and a very engaging plot. I especially appreciated the rationale behind Anne keeping her secrets.
