I liked it. Felt like reading an old tale passed down through generations.

From Journal: 2-16-1979; Identity is uncertain
reflective slow-paced

This was so incredibly boring. Black pearl this, Manta Diablo that. Yadda yadda yadda.

Newbery Challenge 128/412. Just okay. I am learning that all of Scott O’Dell’s books aren’t going to live up to Island of the Blue Dolphins. This reminded me of The Old Man and the Sea, but lacked the depth and metaphor.

Very well written. Reminded me of the Pearl by John Steinbeck. Lot of imagery.

It was good, but too short to be great.

I think this book would be great for a kid, because it teases you and makes you want to keep reading. It reminded me of The Old Man and the Sea, but written for a young audience, and with more superstition, foreboding, and death.

I still see the monster from this when I go swimming at night. Scary-larry for a 6th grader.

Interesting coming-of-age story about Mexican boy whose father owns a pearling fleet and teaches him to run the business. He finds the Black Pearl of heaven, but worries that the Manta Diablo is angry he took it and to blame for tragedy in the town. It would be very interesting for most boys about 8+ and isn't too long, but the ending is a bit of a puzzle to me. Not sure how I am to feel about the Manta Diablo and the troubles they faced. . . perhaps that the real "devil" lies in the greed of man?
