The middle got very slow. And overall this book felt very disjointed and static compared to the rook. The ending was interesting but lacked build up. Say to much exposition to explain things and then it just got sappy. I've read the rook multiple times, but this is a one and done.

None of the books has been as good as the first, but I think this was my second favorite. Still processing how I feel about the ending, but otherwise a lot of fun.

The Rook is one of those books I always recommend to people and Royal Gambit is a satisfying addition to the world of The Checquy. It felt like a fun side-quest for those who are also fans of Red, White & Royal Blue, as it explores the relationship between The Checquy and the British royal family. I still think The Rook and Stiletto are stronger books (I’m sorry but Blitz just didn’t do it for me), but this one felt like a lovely return to the type of storytelling that I loved in the first two. Plus the addition of a quokka to the cast of characters was top notch.

Not sure how I feel about the ending. I enjoyed this and it was fun, but it's my least favorite of the 4. Still, if there's another I'll happily read it right away.

This was the least interesting of the stories in the Rook Files series. Did the author develop a piss fetish in the past few years?
There’s still a bit of the administrative ridiculousness that I like in the series but it feels repetitive.
The ending came out of nowhere.
