It’s early November and honestly I’m more than glad to be finished with this book, it was worth the 3 starts I have it but I’ll explain why I didn’t like it enough to give it anything more.

I’ll start by saying there were parts a really liked, such as the 250 page chunk after the first chapter, and the short bit before the end in San Diego. Unfortunately that leaves the parts I didn’t like; as the beginning, the middle, and the very end.

Kyle was just extremely bland as a main character, his “ambitions” felt empty once we got to the near end of the novel. And he was an asshole to everyone that was supposed to be his lifelong friends.

And for the stuff that I enjoyed: I was really digging the creature aspect, and learning the lore and history of them was really interesting and engaging. Also how the atmosphere was set in places like the once villiage turned farmhouse and the Clarendon house.

I could say more but I’m eager to move on to something better. I’m in between two choices, I’ll start reading the next novella tomorrow. Happy reading

Started VERY strongly. Fully immersed the first 200+ pages. Really started to lose interest once the reveals began to take place - didn’t love the way the story fleshed out.

A very fun read, full of ever-building dread and a haunting atmosphere. This definitely got bogged down at points by long-winded interviews/monologues, particularly in the latter third where there was a lot of exposition to cover. Overall, though, that complaint is minor compared to my enjoyment of the book. I look forward to reading more of the author's work.

This was my first time reading a horror story with a documentary-like setting, which intrigued me a lot. The book started well with its creepy storytelling, making me feel uneasy, especially when I read it at night in the dark. However, the writing style turned me off because I sometimes had a hard time pinpointing who was talking. Additionally, because it was set up as a documentary, the story could be quite wordy. While I understand the need to explain or narrate the situation, the writer seemed to drag the story out with unnecessary dialogue, which sometimes made me bored.

The ending disappointed me a lot; it felt rushed and unsatisfying because I wanted more from the story's conclusion.

Nevertheless, the book managed to keep me entertained, although it took me a long time to finish it. I'm not sure if I would read another book by this author, as the writing style can be a major turn-off for me.

This book comes highly recommended by the folks in the HorrorLit subreddit, and they have yet to steer me wrong. Last Days was legitimately terrifying to the point where I, a grown woman, felt a little uneasy in the dark on nights I read a few chapters before bed. The story was immersive, creepy and grotesque but took a sharp turn into a rushed, unsatisfying ending. I love Nevill's writing overall so I don't have the heart to knock off more than one star, but the end could have been longer and more detailed.
