Uneasy and unenjoyable with little plot

Difficult to believe this book was a debut novel. Zany and laugh out loud funny, it really was different. Dialogue rattled along and left you needing to reread sections to get it fully. Excellent!

A unique, refreshing and bold coming-of-age story that highlights the importance of empathy, authenticity and communication.
With a title like Snowflake, it should unsurprising that Nealon is exploring our sensitivities as well as our judgements. Critically, Nealon isn't here to bash, ridicule, diminish and/or justify a specific type of thought, feeling and behaviour, but rather she practices what she preaches by effortlessly and realistically exploring and examining offense, division and animosity within our society, whether between our own families or passing acquaintances. Furthermore, Nealon seems to stress the importance of introspection and understanding our own emotions before passing judgement on others or being offended by their behaviour, language, and so on. That is not to say that Nealon is justifying and excusing hatred and bigotry, she is doing no such thing! Notably, it's her own maturity, wisdom, humour and empathy felt through her prose that makes her the perfect writer to explore such complex and contentious themes. Also, her writing proficiency extends to a cast of engaging, complex and bold characters who are all authentically-flawed humans who we can both understand and root for - something every writer should be trying to accomplish, but only the great ones can!
Conversely, Nealon could've examined the dreams more and integrated them into the story more in order to stress their purpose and relevance. Also, while the plot did flag and drag a tad for me, I was ultimately satisfied. However, i do think that some people could find it boring and thus not enjoy or even finish the novel.
Conclusively though, as many have already said, this book really is a wonderful and unique reading experience, and is remarkably understated too considering its themes, and thus the only way to truly understand and appreciate this is by reading it for yourself. Enjoy!
