This was a superb novel by a very gifted writer. I had heard many good things about the book so it was with high expectations that I began the book and I was drawn in immediately and moreover it held my interest throughout.

The story centres around student Debbie, just starting in Trinity. Debbie lives on a farm and stays in a mobile home with her uncle Billy while her mother, who suffers from mental illness occupies the family home. The characters are wonderfully portrayed, and though the interactions are rough and the lifestyle tough, dictated by generational family history, there is a lot of love among the family and wider community.

Debbie is trying to fit in and find her place in Trinity while commuting back and forth. She is studying English and comes from a very intelligent family of storytellers and displays a deep interest in language and etymology. I thought this was really cleverly written, we see this fairly dysfunctional family living in fairly crude circumstances but this shouldn’t lead us to assume that lack of intelligence is part of the cause. She meets a friend Xandé “Santy” who she later describes as middle class with her oat milk and yoga retreat but she is rebutted as middle class herself and is forced to see things from another perspective.

There are many shocking events in this story, not least with James Cassidy and Billy towards the end of the novel and it shows how tough and ruthless life can be. How the characters deal with these blows is very interesting and shows their resilience, but vulnerability and how ultimately no matter how tough we may appear, sometimes we need to rely on others.

I loved this story, it will definitely stick with me and the writing was so good I will certainly be looking out for more from this writer in the future.

Didn’t connect with any of the characters and the story lacked depth.
