No, tak tohle nebylo špatné čtení. I když je kniha u nás prezentována i jako thriller, osobně bych jí spíše řadila do kategorie detektivní román, možná s hodně lehkými prvky thrilleru. Jelikož od plnokrevného thrilleru, bych přeci jen čekala něco víc a jiného. Co se týká hlavních vyšetřovatelů, musím říct, že i přes to, že se na první pohled jedná o dvojici plnou klišé, v tomto případě to spolu docela dobře funguje. Velkou měrou i proto, že je celý příběh promyšlený, psaný velice čtivě a přirozeně se odvíjí. Jediné co bych malinko vytkla je, že v některých bodech děje dost koresponduje s jednou z knih od G. Mstertona. Alespoň já v nich nějakou tu podobnost vidím, ale nebylo až tak strašné a do očí bijící. Vše jsem si uvědomila spíše zpětně. Uvidíme, kam bude celá série směřovat dál. V současné chvíli má ale docela dobře našlápnuto.

No le pongo un 5 porque eso lo reservo a libros súper originales, o que me hayan movido mucho por dentro o que me hayan volado la cabeza.
Pero este thriller se merece un 4,5* Me ha parecido muy completo, tiene humor, tiene acción, tiene tramas policiales, tiene asesinatos. Sí, trata un tema muy típico en este tipo de historias, pero la forma de narrarlo, la personalidad de los personajes, el ritmo, los giros de guion, etc, hacen que sea un thriller muy bueno, muy atrapante, de esos que te pican para que los termines…

The Puppet Show was a really, really good thriller. I knew the characters beforehand, since I had mistakenly read book 5 (I think) as the first one, thinking it was a standalone, so I was curious if the attachment I felt for the characters would be similar even if it now was the start of their journey and I can confirm: They were great in book one and I still loved them in book 5, so that’s a really good sign!
I enjoy the way Craven writes his thrillers, especially because they are twisty but not too twisty to become predictable by just assuming the most out of pocket turn next. All plottwists seem really well connected, subtle foreshadowing was applied but it didn’t get too apparent, so while I did anticipate one of the biggest plot twists, I wasn’t mad about it just … happy, I got there before the plot did. (I usually can tell very early on with thrillers, this was maybe just 2-3 chapters before it happened, which is a lot later than I am used to.) I am, in fact, every thriller author’s worst nightmare as a reader.
What I really appreciate is the moral ambiguity of the characters: Even the “good” ones are not just seeing black and white, they highlight the grey, the understandable in horrible acts of violence and I enjoy books that don’t take the easy route of “this is right, we support” and “this is wrong, we punish”, because to every story there is more than the first glance.
While I will probably need a little break after finishing this book, please don’t mistake the long time it took me to read it as a negative aspect, because I was in an overall, academically induced reading slump that had nothing to do with The Puppet Show. I will definitely get back to these books soon!
