Let me start by saying YES THIS IS MY FIRST TIME READING THIS SERIES! I am not one of those who likes to read books that have a lot of hype tied to them because I don't like the letdown if I don't feel its all its cracked up to be. This was one of those times. Granted, I didn't NOT like it, I just didn't LOVE it either. I think it was a good story, but not better than others. I just didn't feel that it was 5 star worthy. But I will be reading the rest of the series. Maybe I'll like it more as it goes on.
Overall, I did enjoy Mead's writing. It really kept me entertained. One of the best things was her characters. I love kick ass heroines and Rose is now one of my favorites. I love how bold, smart, and ruthless she is. Her character is everything that a strong heroine needs to be. Then Dimitri is a great match for her (as her mentor.) She looks up to him and sees him as a "bad ass" when she herself is just as bad ass. I also liked the setting. I found myself thinking of what St. Vladimir's really looked like. Yeah my imagination runs wild lol
Another thing I was confused about, was Dimitri. I read review after review that was like "Oh he's so dreamy, I LOVE him," but he didn't jump out to me like that. Again, maybe in the rest of the series he becomes more dominant as Rose's lover, but I just felt like "Oh ok, he's the love interest." I found myself more into Christian and Lissa's love. I think it might be because I like the bad boys, but whatever it was, I haven't fallen head over heels for Dimitri yet... He was just there.

Deciding to read this book was definitely one of my better life choices. It sounded like it was going to be just another vampire ya book full of angst and love triangles. I'd seen some people say it wasn't, so I figured I'd give it a shot. They were right. It was so good!
I love Lissa and Rose's friendship. There aren't enough good friendship books, and that is definitely the focus of this book, which was so refreshing. Not to say there weren't love interests, there were (more on those later), they just weren't the main focal point like Rose and Lissa's relationship was. The conflict was really well done too. It was equal parts high school drama and high stakes political intrigue. So, it wasn't superficial like high school drama can sometimes come across as in a lot of books, and less frustrating than a lot of political intrigue can be. I liked it a lot.
As for love interests, Dimitri is the greatest. His and Rose's relationship doesn't get that far in this book, but it worked what with everything else going on. Also, WOW, Richelle Mead knows how to write a great makeout scene.

Craftily written. It presented questions and gave answers. I really have nothing else to say but A+++
El mejor libro de vampiros y la verdad, me gustó mucho más que Dark Divine, Hush, Hush (y su continuación), aunque bueno. A Patch lo tengo allá arriba y no lo baja nadie. Ni siquiera Dimitri, o Christian.
This was just as good as the first round!
I read this back in 2015? I think? And I made it a goal to reread all of the Vampire Academy/Bloodlines books (one book a month) this year and I'm really excited to be back in this world.

Terrible book! I couldn't even finish it -- it was that bad. The main character just pissed me off in so many ways, from her behavior to her attitude. I read in many other reviews that Vampire Academy is a lot like the Covenant series, so I read the latter instead. The Covenant series is much better than the Vampire Academy series, at least in my opinion.
I'm a sucker for a kick-ass female protagonist. Not only does this book deliver on that but her best friend, Lissa is just as much of a bad-ass as Rose herself. Their friendship is genuine and fun to experience. The characters are well written and relatable. I've read the entire series and while I would likely never reread it, and my opinion on the series itself is less than amazing, this book is still a good read. The romance between Rose and her teacher is weird, and ultimately why I ended up disliking the series as a whole. It's uncomfortable and unnecessary and drags on throughout all the other books as well. Even when Rose is finally in a stable, healthy relationship; we're still hearing about Dimitri every time she speaks.
The first book was good, and if the rest of the books had followed it- by prioritizing Rose and Lissa's friendship and the plot development, instead of Rose and Dimitri, this could've been an amazing series. But they didn't. So we're left with something that's probably good for a one time read in high school and that's about it.

Tried to read this book awhile ago and could not get past the first two chapters. I decided to try again and I bought it on my nook. Finished it within one day and I was hooked. Loved the storyline and the characters. I also kinda love the names in this book.
watched the movie before i got the chance to read.
