My rating is based on the assumption that something must have gotten lost in translation, which is a shame. Like others, I found the pacing to be odd. The plot crawled along at a very slow pace - slower than Hannah's The Nightingale, which I already found to move along at a turtle pace.
To me, the writing style in English seems most appropriate to the young adult demographic (but leaning more towards high school). The themes of racism and discrimination were heavy handed for adults but would be a good (and appropriately challenging) introduction for high schoolers. The themes around mental health and suicide are discussed at length but simply enough that I would expect to be able to discuss it with a teenager after their reading it.
I didn't know much about the Sami people before this novel and I did walk away having learned more. Major bonus points to the narrarator for the audiobook who clearly took the time and effort to learn proper pronunciation. I think this just wasn't what I was really expecting when I picked it up.

Graphic: Suicide attempt
Re: suicide content There is a description of an attempted suicide that is interrupted. There is further significant discussion about suicide and mental health after a family member learns about the suicide attempt.

I really loved this book and all it taught me. I did think some of the stuff in the final scenes is the book veered into overdramatic and silly, but the coming of age aspects of it were so lovely.
