I really enjoyed this book but there are some elements missing that would have made it a 5 star otherwise.

  • The last third of the book felt rushed. There was this beautiful world building, character development and depth for the forts two thirds and then everything felt sped up and shallower.
  • The "baddies" in the fire breathing wyrms were very 2 dimensional. They were pantomime level "bad guys* which felt out of place in a book that had otherwise explored the perspectives and motives of the antagonists to the main protagonists.

I'd recommend it as a read, and I think Samantha Shannon is a great author BUT I'm a little disappointed because of those points.

Nice worldbuilding but too slow paced and long. Somewhat predictable

Complex plot and very well written. The story was a little drawn out at times making the book longer than was probably necessary.

This is a beautifully written book. I found it impressive how the author was able to keep me interested even with the multiple different POV’s, and the way they all came together in the end was *chef’s kiss*

‘feminist LotR/GoT’ extremely generous. Not a terrible book but  far from apt description.

Only feminist insofar as it has some male archetypes that are women instead. No exploration or undercurrent of actual feminist theory.

Relationships set up poorly, both friendships & romance felt hollow.

Overall a good book, it took me a while to fully get into it for the first 100 pages or so but it was definitely worth it. It was an emotional rollercoaster throughout but an enjoyable one. I truly did fall in love with some of the characters in this book and I was so invested in Sabran and Ead - honestly their side story was probably one of the main hooks for me personally that and Tané.
