The writing is very good, which means many of the atrocities described are vivid and I could not handle it

mmm mixed feelings on this one before i get into it i will say i found out the author is a (pretty staunch) zionist AFTER reading so cant say id recommend purchasing this one (i borrowed from library)

This was a read for work book club - the story is set mostly in the Warsaw ghetto during the Holocaust but jumps back and forth in time. Obviously this was a pretty heavy topic and a poignant reminder that “never again” could in fact happen again if we continue down this path! History is really not as far away as we imagine and the plot really captures the brutality of this time. Characters are messy and make impossible choices to survive war, which I really respected as a writing choice and thought worked well. Now where the book started to lose me: truly it was so bizarre to me to have so much of the book be around
Bina pining for her brother in law…. like the need to add random drama to an already DRAMATIC AND TERRIFYING time feels over the top? It really irked me but again I guess it served its purpose of adding major drama to the story.
In addition, hated to see that characters who lived through such brutal persecution and war are implied to be super chill with that happening in Israel to people they don’t care about… really disappointing in that regard. Overall, I did think it was decently written and a pretty engaging plot but can’t say I recommend this one.

I've read A LOT of WW2 historical fiction and usually have to take some breaks, but this was a very unique and ambitious take on a part of the war I didn't know anything about. It was an interesting story of survival in the Warsaw Ghetto that combines resistance fighting, Hollywood glamour, espionage, and the relentless pursuit of justice. The romantic sub-plot was something I could have done without - it seemed rather unnecessary and detracted from the main story, but I enjoyed this one.

WOW. A fantastic story seeped in various true WWII stories woven together in an entirely fictional new story. It is stunning, tragic, and wonderful. Many TWs.
