The Goddess of Warsaw by Lisa Barr is an ambitious historical fiction novel set in the Warsaw ghetto under Nazi occupation in WWII and in Hollywood in 2005. I listened to the audio version, expertly narrated by Jane Oppenheimer. The FMC, Bina Blonski, is a Polish Jew who survives unspeakable horrors in the Warsaw Ghetto to become Lena Browning, a legendary Hollywood actress. “Survival is not heroic, it is ugly”. Lena promises revenge on her Nazi tormentors and hunts them down as her celebrity grows.
This novel is well researched and timely. If I had one complaint it would be that it may have been a bit too ambitious. It attempts to combine a tearful story of life and death in the Warsaw ghetto under Nazi occupation, a doomed forbidden romance, a behind the scenes look at Hollywood, and a vigilante femme fatale story. It kept me entertained. Be sure to read the thoughtful author’s note. 4/5⭐️
