This is a Queer Brides of Dracula retelling, written in letters from his first wife Constanta and it is absolute perfection. One that I know will be on my mind for months to come.

First off the writing in this is beautiful and lyrical and really adds so much depth to the melancholy and dark atmosphere. The story is heart wrenching and experiencing it through Constanta’s eyes, seeing first hand her struggles and emotions and watching as she slowly regained her independence and starts to question what his love actually means was everything.

The characters are so well fleshed out and I feel in love with them. Seeing Constanta, Magdalena and Alexi interact together watching as their love for each other develops was breathtaking and my favourite part of the story.

Trigger warnings for intimate partner abuse, gaslighting, war themes, blood and gore, depression, self harm.

Definitely one of the most ‘meh’ books I’ve read this year. I don’t really understand the hype. The story lacked detail and depth. I wanted to love it. But it just all fell flat.

This was a beautiful story but wasn’t something that entrapped me. It gave a lot of ‘Interview with a Vampire’ vibes in the way of found family. There was little to no romance but more constant background as the story is written in a style of a letter to a lover. By the end, you can see and draw the parallels of overcoming a toxic of abusive relationship and seeking freedom. Again, it was beautiful and meaningful but just wasn’t my type of story that sucked me in.

I went into this expecting romance, and that wasn't what I got. However, I came out of it deeply moved by the writing style. This wasn't romance. It was a poignant story about abuse, and breaking free of it.
