Charlie Decker to chłopiec, który nie dość, że miał już poważny konflikt z prawem, to na dodatek jest uważany za niezrównoważonego, ma paskudne relacje z ojcem i cierpi na wieczne problemy z żołądkiem. Pewnego dnia wezwano go do gabinetu dyrektora, a po kłótni z nim chłopak zostaje wydalony. Charlie jednak nie przejmuje się tym za bardzo. Podpala rzeczy w swojej szafce, a następnie wraca do klasy, strzela do nauczycielki, zamyka się z pozostałymi i tak zaczyna się główny wątek.
Cała historia wydaje się wręcz groteskowa, bo mamy tu delikatną mieszankę tragizmu z komizmem. Szczególnie na początku. Widać absurdalne reakcje bohaterów, gdy, np. jeden z nauczycieli wydaje się nie rozumieć, że został oddany strzał w jego stronę i w dalszym ciągu mówi o alarmie pożarowym. Jest tu masa zachowań, które w rzeczywistości nie miałyby racji bytu, ale czytelnik wie, że to celowe.
Wraz z postępem historii zaczyna być ona coraz bardziej dramatyczna, bo o ile są tu niewiarygodne reakcje bohaterów, to opowiadane przez nich smutne historie jak najbardziej mają racje bytu. Uczniowie mają swoje problemy, swoje koszmary, z którymi ukrywali się aż do teraz.
Gdybym nie wiedziała, że Bachman to King, to powiedziałabym, że ten Bachman ma bardzo podobny styl do Kinga. Ma wręcz te ‘’kingowskie opisy’’. Ciężko o tej książce mówić od strony fabularnej, bo nie sądzę, żeby fabuła sama w sobie była tutaj najważniejsza. Nie wszystko jest tu powiedziane wprost. Przedstawione jest to w formie mniej i bardziej wymownych scen (szczególnie ostatnia scena w klasie), które można samemu interpretować i analizować. Można się nawet z niektórymi sytuacjami w pewien sposób utożsamiać. Nie podobało mi się jednak to, że znowu mamy kogoś, kto jest agresywny, niezrównoważony i WSZYSCY są winni, tylko nie on. Każda kłótnia, każde złe słowo, każda bójka traktowane są jako powód do przemocy, nie doszukując się przy tym winy w sobie.
To czy książka nam się spodoba, czy nie, będzie w dużej mierze zależeć od tego, czego właściwie od niej oczekujemy. Jeżeli liczymy na dużo akcji, dużo napięcia i rozlewu krwi, no to możemy poczuć zawód. Historie opowiadane przez bohaterów są raczej smutne, dołujące i dość spokojne, a na pewno większość z nich. Więc albo się czytelnik przez znaczną część fabuły wynudzi, albo podejdzie z ‘’czystym umysłem’’, sięgając po zakazany owoc i niczym się nie sugerując sam wyrobi sobie opinię (co uważam za najlepszą opcję).

Ale kiedy kończysz piętnaście, zaczynasz zjadać zatrute jabłka, rosnące na twoim wewnętrznym drzewie bólu. Tak wygląda Oświecenie w Zachodnim Stylu. Uczysz się wpychać pięści w usta, aby stłumić krzyki."

I had to listen to the audiobook on YT for this one because you can't buy it in print anymore. The author banned this book and it makes sense why. Great listen.

Wow this one is a shocker after reading carrie.
Well is it though? This books seems to be a straightforward story about a school shooter before the famous columbine mass shooting occurred. However that's just the superficial stage for a much more deeper dive into human psyche.
I really think it's pretty intriguing and very interspective on how the thin line between someone who is mentally screwed and someone who by all means is the all American popular strong jock not be so different. It's a commentary on how what exactly makes one sane. What makes one human what trauma(big and small) does to the psyche. Who's crazier or more evil Brandon Thompson the insurance ceo who killed hundreds by denying Healthcare playing the greedy mass murderer or his murderer Luigi mangione?
It brings to question who really is moral? As the book portrays even the nerdiest or goodie goodie students have their dark and inhumane or immoral sides. It's not the Mc who in the end causes the most harm it's those who on the outside are called victims as pretentious as they admit so early on. In the end like in the modern example of Luigi the victims of being held as hostages support the Mc during and after the fact.
In an age with more understanding on trauma and their consequences this novel still holds true on the lack of understanding and treatment of the mind. This was written. Way before the school shooting was a thing and before all the bs that comes with it. It is a shame this book was for all terms and purposes censored by as I understand it not being printed anymore.
Like Carrie I think this book delves into the psyche of the dark haze and mist of being a teenager or human in general and how thin and pretentious society and morality is seen.
I enjoyed it Alot and never thought it would be so thought provoking. It made me question my already critical views on humanity, society and morality. The ending wasn't as cliffhanger based and annoying as Carrie's was but, It still let's you wonder what happened to Charlie and his parents?
