While never my favorite character in the main series, I do love what the Eddings did here. She became one of my favorite characters and it was lovely to re-read the main series knowing more about Polgara. It was both an "autobiography" and a further history of the world. Expanding the universe was great and a lot happened that it was worth a several hundred page book. It helps that in universe, Polgara is a apparently a better storyteller than her father, whose book felt a little drier and emptier than this one.

Reread it again this year. I love the writing of Eddings and the whole Belgariad and Mellorean series. The book is like a comfort blanket, I return to it often.

Mind-numbingly dull. Unsympathetic main character. Poorly written. Tries to be funny but fails. 400 pages too long. Fixated on race and gender. Lessens the original books.

I enjoyed this book, but found an entire book of Polgara's point of view to be a bit grating - she's a bit full of herself (which I understand is the point). I enjoyed the Belgariad series, but have not read the Mallorean, which is the other set using the same characters. I think that this book refers to some events from the Mallorean, so I didn't quite understand all that was going on, but otherwise a nice diversion for a few days!
