This poem cycle is beautiful. Ruminations on how we make meaning as we go through various stages of life, how our connections to nature, people, and the relationships we forge with them impact this persona. I saw parts of myself in Mrs. Schmetterling, though I’m not quite in the stage of life she is in. I can only imagine how my understandings of these poems will change as I do.

From the port: “Schmetterling is the German word for “butterfly.” It signifies the Dadaist notion of beauty as accident, developed in resistance to the reasoned, strategic atrocities of World War I (Schmetterling is also the name given to the experimental German antiaircraft missile, the Henschel Hs 117, a radio-guided surface-to-air missile project developed near the close of World War II. The formal deployment planned for March 1945 never occurred).
