Super fun audiobook, I loved the narrator and the emotion she adds to the characters.

The characters gave me mixed emotions. It was interesting to see that most of the "antagonists" in this book are the older generation who put money and inheritance above all else. With each generation above the last leaning more toward the importance of money. While the younger generation, specifically Nick but others like Astrid, seem to be ignoring the importance of money and put love first. which I think reflects the real-life generational divides we all experience with our older family members as we navigate a changing world. of course, there were a few that care, but even then it seemed to be more of a push from their families rather than true ambitions.

All the characters are flawed, complex, or at the very least had blind spots that make them interesting. which was great to see with such a large cast. Characters that I thought were just for exposition ended up being vital to the story and the characters' progression. So many ended up being two-faced which made it hard to guess who was actually on Rachel's side and who wasn't. It was a guessing game until the end. I am very much looking forward to reading the sequel and seeing how things progress.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s so wild and outrageous.

Having watched the film before reading the book, it was more noticeable where things had been rewritten or left out for the movie. I liked the book more though as you got a better understanding of who the characters are and why they behave certain ways. And of course, the missing scenes that were left out of the movie.

My favourite character was Astrid - I really rooted for her all the way through! With the way that everyone else in the family behaved, she came across as the only ‘normal’ person.

Eddie and Eleanor were the worst!! There was no actual need for their attitude - i’m glad their storylines worked out the way that they did!

I’m so looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I wanted to read this book because I really enjoyed the film and when I found out it was based on a book, I had to read it. I hate to say it though . . . the film was better than the book.

When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry. But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details. One, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three, that he just happens to be the country’s most eligible bachelor. On Nick’s arm, Rachel may as well have a target on her back the second she steps off the plane, and soon, her relaxed vacation turns into an obstacle course of old money, new money, nosy relatives, and scheming social climbers. This book is based in America and all over Asia. It is a fiction romance adult fiction novel.

Okay, let’s start with what I liked about this book: Peik Lin and Nick – they saved this book! Peik Lin was so funny in the film but in the books she is so much more caring but also slightly mischievous, especially when she didn’t get to go into Nick’s house when she dropped Rachel off. But I loved her sweetness and her chemistry and I hope we get to see more of her. Also, I loved Nick, he was so funny and caring and sweet and you can see it from a man’s point of view as to when and how he messed up but did the good o’ thing of big gestures.

The issues I have with this novel is the writing. It was a very slow book, it dragged. But I don’t think the multiple parts helped – I don’t mind a book split in parts but at least carrying on the chapters as normal. When it hit part 2 and started again at Chapter 1 – it sort of confused me, I thought it was three books rolled into one. Another thing is usually, I like multiple POVs but with this book, the chapters say who the POVs are from like Nick and Rachel but then you’ll get Eleanor’s or Peik Lin’s POV in the middle of that, which made it more confusing as it would just switch in a sentence. The whole of part 3 is under as locations so it took me a while to realise which POV this was from.

Overall, I am really disappointed with this book, which hurts because I was so hoping it would be amazing. I gave this book 3 stars because of how slow-paced and confusing it was. I don’t know if I’m going to read the two books in the series but we will see.
