I think I watched the show first so I was not really interested in watching the book.

dark funny tense medium-paced

I was into the story and how it would play out but I do have to say that it is messed up. The thought process and reasonings that are given for what happens make "sense" as you are in the MCs head but not ok.

I am curious to watch the show. Though I don't know if I want to read anymore of the books... I guess we will see.

I say this with all the love: I hate how well done this book was. The technical aspect of the narration was just phenomenally executed.

De duistere stem in je hoofd

Na het zien van de Netflix-serie You leek het verhaal bekend terrein. Toch lonkte het boek, want voor de Popsugar-challenge moest er een titel gelezen worden die begint met een Y. Zo belandde de wereld van Joe Goldberg toch in mijn handen: en wat voor wereld dat is…

Het verhaal wordt volledig verteld vanuit Joe’s ik-perspectief. Geen ontsnapping, geen andere stemmen. Je zit opgesloten in zijn hoofd, hoort zijn gedachten, voelt zijn obsessies. Caroline Kepnes beschrijft minutieus hoe iemand beweegt, praat en kijkt. Dat maakt het verhaal soms wat traag, maar tegelijkertijd huiveringwekkend realistisch.

Grote actiescènes blijven uit, maar de spanning is overal voelbaar. Ze schuilt in manipulatie, spelletjes en psychologisch gekonkel. Joe is een meesterlijk opgebouwd personage: een zieke geest die zijn eigen waanzin verkoopt als liefde. Het is een beklemmende ervaring die je vasthoudt tot de laatste bladzijde.
