A sweet, enjoyable read with a fun cast of characters. I like the Netflix show more, but this was a fine read.

Are we just going to gloss over the fact that parts of this book are blatant plagiarism of a book written in 2005? The scene with the bra feels way too similar to a scene in Megan Meade's Guide to the McGowan boys, and the whole concept is way too similar for comfort. A girl goes to live with family friends who have an absurd number of male children. The girl falls in love with one of the boys. One of the boys has an intimate relationship with his brother's girlfriend. The oldest boy is out of high school, and one of the boys is the hotshot sports star who has an on-again, off-again "girlfriend" who is super jealous of the girl. I know it was originally on Wattpad, and it's giving off major fanfiction vibes of what it would be like if Megan ended up with Evan and not Finn, there were more kids like why did this new family have so many sets of twins (Cheaper by the Dozen much?), and the reason Megan goes to live with them is because they die, not because they move to Korea.

I was curious so I watched the show. Then I decided to pick up the book to see how it differed. This is one of the very few times where I can't say the reading experience was better than watching.
There is no diversity. The characters are not fleshed out. Jackie's relationships are shallow.
Did I enjoy reading it? Sure in a "trashy" reality TV kind of way.
Would I recommend this to
anyone? No not really

This read like a very and I mean very clichéd Wattpad book. The main character being shipped off somewhere else due to a death in the family. Think of the most basic Wattpad story and here you have it. Girl meets boys and thinks they are hot, curses herself for the though, and then goes on to end up with one of them.
Off the bat the characters were over sexualized which since this is a YA that’s just uncomfortable. The boys were all really creepy, the shower moment was just weird.
Overall, it felt like the characters didn’t have anything unique or original to their personalities. There were so many stereotypes and none of them were executed well.

This was such a fun read. I really enjoyed it and found myself breezing by and finishing the book from start to end in almost one sitting.
I really liked the tv series adaptation so I knew I'd enjoy the book too and I definitely
did. There were a lot of differences too which didn't make the book boring in anyway whatsoever for someone whom has seen & liked the adaptation prior. The book has its own special place and the adaptation its own!
So Jackie is a girl that's faced so much of loss and I loved how she finds a home away from home after all of that tragedy with the Walters. She was very brave & strong despite it all. I think I slightly like book Jackie more than tv series Jackie tho 😂
This had the perfect amounts of drama, tension, slowburn, pining, family dynamics,teenage-ness,love and growth 🤌🏻 It was written so well and I had a great time reading about all of these characters and the way it vividly played out in my head as I read.
Novak has a way of having so many characters take the stage at once but not making it get confusing and having each one shine in their own unique way with their distinctive personalities and I'm someone that gets put off when there are too many characters. So take it from me. She does a brilliant job balancing it all!
The author brings that good nostalgic feeling you get from reading epic YA romances as a young teen. So if you want all those feels I recommend picking up this one AND watching the adaptation but take note there are quite a lot of changes or things not shown in the tv series that's in the book.
It's a really amazing YA read though and you'll find yourself thrown into the Walter world as soon as you begin reading for the writer slayed writing in this genre.
I'd like to state I'm still very much team Cole. He had a few kinda mean moments but I felt like Jackie was mean to him too at times 🙈 and ultimately Cole was a total cutie sweetheart and I swoon for the way he cares so much about Jackie and wants her! I ship them so much I NEED more moments between them stat! The chemistry between these 2 was everything 👏🏻 the Cole effect is totally legit ❤️
Very much looking forward to reading book 2 and watching season 2
