I was honestly surprised with the development of the story. It had a little more substance than I was expecting, and it actually hit on some issues in a "higher level" way than I am used to in YA romance-y type books. The conflicts and resolutions didn't seem trite or brushed over for the love story. Jackie had to deal with losing her family members and moving across the country. Dealing with this really snuck up on Jackie, and she had to figure out how to handle it without losing face with her new family.
