Overall a really compelling book, can'  wait to start the next one! I enjoyed the very different setting to Western fantasy and the different types of magics. Would love to have some illustrations of the animals as I found them a bit hard to visualise.
The characters were unique and relatable despite their flaws. The two main female protagonists were very compelling and I enjoyed their different points of view.
Finally, the short chapters were satisfying and contributed to it being a real page-turner!

The world-building was a bit slow in the beginning, but once our characters’ stories started intersecting, the book moved so quickly. Inan’s character was a bit confusing to me (though I think he is also just confused generally), but I loved watching Amari & Zélie’s growth and relationship development.
Also, the complexities of revolution against oppression were present in the characters’ struggles and conversations, which inspired me to consider these same complexities in reality. I want to know more about this world, and I want to know what happens next!

"I won't let your ignorance silence my pain."

1. Please read the authors note, if you've read the story.
2. This was fascinating, the story and it's characters took so many turns in their character development. It all made sense though. There was a lot of hurt and grief in a few days storyline. The characters also had noticeable trauma, and all handled it differently, which is very good writing, because I've also read books where that was completely disregarded. So all in all worth the read, I think it's better to read it not spread out over months though.
3. Crooked Kingdom vibes at times.

"Everyone else feels like being caught in the rain. You're the whole tsunami."

The writing in this book was so intriguing and the plot was fascinating! However, the one couple that was created as a enemies to lovers type thing was mostly annoying and I couldn’t see any chemistry between them. Despite that, this book had an amazing end and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

Living in a world that hates what her bloodline could be and taxes her very existence, Zélie find herself in an epic adventure that could change not only her life but the lives of every potential Magi in Orisha. Tomi Adeyemi weaves real world emotion and pain seamlessly into her beautifully crafted fantastical world with such heart and soul that I found my own breaking while empathising with the deep, rich characters. I’m Interested to see where they end up next.
