Can I call this a cozy, gothic mystery? I absolutely loved the setting of Arrowood and the deep south. I wish I could read more about Arden's life after finishing this - I just really liked her character. This story kept me guessing until the very end, and while I was thinking in somewhat of the right direction I still didn't foresee the ending.

I don't care for passive women in books. Spend most of my reading saying "do something".
It's a interesting read based around what could be a really scary set of events but it never truly got going. Each event happens and just passes onto the next without any real excitement sadly.

Years prior twenty-one month old identical twins Violet and Tabatha Arrowood were abducted from there front yard. Arden their older sister and eight at the time was the only witness as she was the one watching them. The girls kidnapping was never solved and eventually became a cold case the aftermath tore her family apart. They all relocated as the memory’s at Arrowood were just too painful to endure. It’s now seventeen years later her dad has passed and she’s practically estranged from her mum and Arden is now back she’s inherited Arrowood with all of its tragic history. With the assistance of Josh Kyle from Midwest mysteries who contacts Arden as he is currently writing a book regarding the cold case, Arden delves back into the mystery of her sisters disappearance hoping to get to the truth and finally get some closure.
This sounded much better than it turned out to be and I only continued reading because i wanted to know what really happened to the twins Violet and Tabatha. Unfortunately the closure was also very underwhelming and somewhat predicable and It took ages to get to the point. Nothing much was happening and to top it off Arden wasn’t that liable either or even that charismatic she was basically rather meh and wholly forgettable. Nothing really stood out about her in any way and if I had to describe her I’d say morose and overly pessimistic.
The writing wasn’t bad it’s just nothing much occurred throughout and honestly I was expecting much more. It’s described as having a haunting gothic ambience and it just didn’t. It’s not spine tingling or atmospheric mainly I found it rather bland and boring. Unfortunately this wasn’t my vibe and I didn’t really enjoy this one but I did end up finishing but that is only down to wanting some closure as I was committed and it’s quite a short read.

would’ve been a 4 stars, but the beginning was very slow and the ending was a bit of a disappointment. was hoping we would’ve gotten more answers than what we were left with. overall, still enjoyed it. Laura McHughs writing is something i connect with. will read more of her backlist.
