This was a very good mystery novel. It had me second and third guessing throughout. This was quite different that The Weight Of Blood (her debut and the better book in my opinion), but it is also a very different story as well. McHugh's books are not light or for the faint of heart. They deal with real world problems and issues and as such, could also be triggering for some. I did think it was a really good book, not necessarily "enjoyable" by my usual standards, but then it is also quite a bit darker that my go to genres. Four Stars.

This is really 3.5 stars. Good story, likable characters - a few too many loose ends and “huh?” moments, but overall an enjoyable read.

The main character has a thesis that involves nostalgia. I picked up this book because of its references to Iowa, grand old houses, and the A&W drive-in. I finished it because I wanted to know what happened. Definitely engaging. I might read another by McHugh. But only 3 stars because I won’t recommend it. Main character makes lots of questionable choices and lots of potentially triggering content.

Another well-written, dark & twisty page-turner from the author of [b:The Weight of Blood|18209468|The Weight of Blood|Laura McHugh|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1395611141s/18209468.jpg|25630270]. The protagonist Arden Arrowood may have heavy emotional baggage, but her narrative voice is strong and engaging; I became very invested in her attempts to re-visit the memories of her sisters' disappearance. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys atmospheric novels full of suspense.

This was one of our Litsy #whodunitthesequel picks, and I really enjoyed it! I’m glad I joined this reading group as it’s exposing me to books that I might not normally pick up. This one’s moody, a bit dark, and really more about characters learning to live with the past through solving the mystery. Very deep, lots of symbolism, even some paranormal elements. A very good read.

Cleanly written quiet mystery that holds your attention from beginning to end.

Really great. Gothic. Creepy. An air of...something.

Well plotted and easy to read! Easy to recommned

4.5 stars. A gripping gothic mystery that kept me turning pages. Can't wait to read "The Weight of Blood."
