I feel conflicted about this one. I really enjoyed the first half and felt the world building was good and the action was solid. I think the pacing sort of fell apart in the second half though, and I had a lot of “oh okay, what does that mean then?” moments during the last 10 or so chapters. Also a totally wild ending I really didn’t see coming and I’m not sure how to feel about. Overall, a fun read, but I think it could have stuck the landing a bit more.

An enjoyable read overall that had some tough parts. The ending is the kind of thing I technically like on paper but am very conflicted over in practice. At least for this in particular story. It wasn't as satisfying as I needed it to be for the contents of this book. I am a huge fan of Dewes other series and am very excited to get back to it when the next one comes out. If there is a sequel to this book, I would consider reading it, but I don't think I could tolerate another ending like this one.

This was going to be a 4-star for me but then the END happened and now I'm mad and sad and cliff-hangered and not quite sure I can recover.

It was a fun read: fast-paced and action-packed like the Divide stories, with imaginative futuristic tech. But I didn't feel as connected to the characters in this story except for maybe a chunk in the middle. If (when?) a sequel comes out I'd definitely re-read it though.

I feel compelled to write my own review because from what I can tell a lot of the low ratings are "because of the ending" and it's frustrating when people don't distinguish between the ending not being what they personally wanted for the characters and the ending being bad.

Friends, the ending was not what I wanted for the characters, but it was very good. A+ well executed punch to the emotions. It was a satisfying ending to the story, if, again, not satisfactory for characters I'd come to love, and as I suspect the author intended I'm having a lot of feelings about that. I don't want to spoil anything and so I won't elaborate on what exactly those feelings are.

As for everything that wasn't the ending, as the four-star rating says, put simply, I really liked it.

I LOVED her other books (The Last Watch and The Exiled Fleet). This one just never fully clicked for me. I felt like I was always a step behind in understanding how the technology really worked, and the characters were interesting, but I didn’t fall in love with them the way I did with her other books. Overall, this was a good vacation read for me, despite my disappointments.

A 4.5/5 for sure.

This futuristic techno-military thriller with the fate of humanity in the balance, I really enjoyed nearly everything about this story! While some themes seemed a bit derivative, they were pieced together in a refreshing way that held my attention, and kept be wanting more. My only critique was it's ending... perhaps a sequel can remedy that for me! (Hint, hint, Dewes...)

My thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
