There is a LOT said about life...in this story. Especially for a person (Adriene) who has died 96 times. She also rezoned 96 times, too.

Early on in this book, I kept thinking about Altered Carbon and Edge of Tomorrow (Live, Die, Repeat). There are similar conversations, but I believe J.S. Dewes does an incredible job reaching down into your guts (reigns) and pulling them up for conversation.

There is a gut punch that happens in this story...that made me SO mad, that I had to walk away from the book. BTW, the reveal was incredibly crafted and exposed...and me being PISSED off had NOTHING to do with not liking the story, but being mad at the villain of the story and what that person did to our main character.

I even reached out and told the author how much it hurt me, being SO invested in the character that THIS happened. BTW, she repsonded and understood (obviously).

I hope MORE people would pick up this book.

Let me say this, too. I had never noticed the cover...till I shared this with a Discord Book Club friend of mine. He told me, in so many words, how unnerving the cover was...and he was right. Of course, I'd seen it, but as I read the story, the cover meant more, and more and more.

This story may not be for everyone, but...goodness, show this book some love. It is a well crafted story, with a protagonist that you grow to love, and then HURT for...when IT happens.

This author’s first book was out of the park! Loved it and subsequently couldn’t wait to read this one. It was tremendous up until the end when it completely fell apart for me. Not sure what she was thinking but where she took the story left me flat (and, frankly, depressed). Not sure I’m going to read the follow up to Last Watch because of it. We’ll have to give it some time………

While not exactly innovative, Rubicon is an excellent take on the tension between AI and humanity.
