I wish I had been warned of the on page animal death that happens early on in the book.. so I'm now warning others. The book otherwise was fine, but it threw me off. If that isn't something that gets to you, you would probably enjoy this book more than me!

Heard this is a really good thriller that helps you get into thrillers. I thought it was fine. Lily is interesting, but I felt her development felt rather shallow at points. Yes there are twists, and the first one was the most surprising. After that I kind of wanted the book to just… finish. Then the backtracking between POVs is probably what annoyed me the most, as it was an intentionally mysterious device to reveal plot twists. It’s good, wouldn’t call it great.

A wild cat & mouse story. Loved the multiple POVs and nods to Agatha Christie along with other famous mystery writers.

Ok hear me out - Peter Swanson's writing style does not work for me. But the plot and characters of this were just intriguing enough that now I have to read the second book.

How am I gonna tell the friend who recommended this to me that it was a miss?

I mean, I finished it. It's not a bad way to kill time. I kept reading because I wanted closure, though that speaks to my compulsive need to know as much as it speaks to Swanson's writing. The voice was flat across character POVs. There's a layer of "men writing women"-style misogyny over everything that didn't feel like a deliberate feature; it was just distracting. The ending was abrupt and felt inconsistent with the rest of the story. Feels kind of flimsy, overall.
