Final Thoughts
Thank you to @thatmillennialreader for hyping this one, this 1920s fantasy romance was so much fun to read. We love our morally grey characters, we have magic. I'm finding myself drawn more into the "real" world urban fantasy and this one hit the nail on the head.

“If something happens to me, I swear I will haunt you for the rest of my days, Jack Warren.”

He released a low sigh. “You already do.”

Morally grey fae during the roaring 20s? What more could you ask for??

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book. This was an urban fantasy set in NYC. But not just modern day NYC, it was the roaring 20s. The world building was done well. It started off slowly introducing us to the Fae and creatures until you were fully immersed into the world.
I loved the character growth of the main character. She started as an innocent girl from a small town to someone who grew into herself and her abilities.

The slow burn, enemies to lovers trope led to some spicy scenes

sooo... what to say. I loved the first chapters. Then got annoyed by the fmc. she struggled sooo hard to come to terms with that a hot, powerful fae wants to be her soulmate... i mean, we fuck and die like heroes, come on! then, it got better... and she became actually pretty badass. and the spice is worth the wait! and they're actually so cute! but theeen... i am not sure how i feel about the plot twist at the end. on the one hand, it was coming. on the other hand... it kind of dampened the whole love story for me. so yeah. but overall, i enjoyed the book, and i loved the unique setting.

I loved the first 10% but after that it seemed like the writing style changed and the main character just wasn't my vibe anymore.

I liked the premise, but it jumped around a little too much and could have used more editing to keep things coherent.

This book was incredibly immersive, magical, and unique! I've never read a fantasy like this before and was sucked in right away.

It has some of the best fantasy romance tropes, like enemies to lovers and fated mates, but was told in such a unique setting. Taking place in the 1920s, the world of prohibition, speakeasies, flappers was developed so well, I was immersed right away. Then there were the fantasy elements that rounded out the world building perfectly. Fae royalty, dark magic, blessings, curses, low fae and other magical beings - it was all woven together so well and was so fantastical.

Jack rivals all the other fae book boyfriends out there as one of the best. He and a lot of the other characters were so mysterious and complex, I enjoyed seeing their stories unfold throughout the story. There was just enough spice to add to the growing romance and plenty of swoon to go around. Some of the more adventurous scenes were super fun as well.

It's hard to fully encapsulate this amazingly rich and incredible story in one short review, so I would just recommend to read it and be swept off your feet like I was!

Thank you so much to Marilyn Marks for reaching out and sending this ARC in exchange for my honest review ❤️

For lack of better words: this was such a FUN book to read. It started off with a historical fiction feel — all of the Great Gatsby / Peaky Blinders comparisons are exactly right — and slowly the fae world begins to open up and present itself. It was such an intriguing way to make the fantasy/fae world feel real.
