I really like it, the characters have such a variety of personalities and that make the story advance and be interesting. The world Cassandra creates, is full of magic, love and friendship in a inspiring manners.
This was actually a bit better than I expected. It's not the best book I've ever read, but it's not terrible either. The Mortal Instruments series as a whole is pretty mediocre to me. I wouldn't ever reread any of the books. That said, there was just enough intrigue to keep me reading through. This book is no exception. I don't really like the characters of Clary and Jace too much (too cliche), but the whole incest twist makes them quite interesting to read. I don't really like Maia the werewolf too much (she's pretty much just there to be a love interest to Simon), and Simon is mostly there just to add to the whole love triangle thing. And now, starting in this book, he's also an OP vampire who can go in the sun... for some reason. Alec is okay, but pretty much the only reason why he's here is to be the one gay character. Literally the only thing the story focuses on is his being gay. I'd like to have a LITTLE more character development, at least. To be honest, the only character I actually like is Magnus Bane. It's a little hard to dislike him, even if I wanted to.
Well, that's that. Read it if you want, but don't expect too much.

I don't care what anyone says, I love this series! (I still love TID more though)

↑aaaahhh.. good old late 2000s
I can't even explain it properly. It's just that there is something about it that makes me so happy. Sort of like coming back home. That late 2000s YA style... all the feels, the nostalgia... I can't even... what are words?
Let's be clear about something - I am fully aware that the writing style is nothing special, it's not classy or fancy or anything like that. Clary is a special snowflake... the love triangles... blah blah blah...I just don't care.
I love to read Cassie's books. I love the drama. There's just too much love here. (except for Simon I still don't like him that much, but hey, a girl can not give her love to everyone)

I didn't finish this book. It was a first book so I was willing to forgive some of the clunkiness in the writing, but parts of the story just seemed too obvious. I didn't particularly care about the main character, and the love interests were just so . . . obvious.
3.5 stars
I read this in German years ago and in honor of the movie coming out this summer, I decided to reread it. Now, don't misunderstand me. I am, for the most part, a fan of Cassandra Clare and have read almost everything she's written. What struck me in this rereading was the common mistakes of a first book. The writing was in places quite purple, the characterizations a bit stale and cliche, and the plot was drawn out unnecessarily. All things I didn't notice when I read it in a foreign language, or things I didn't care about back then.
That being said, I am still a fan and have enjoyed the parts Ms. Clare does wonderfully - the romantic tension. She does a wonderful job of capturing the hesitation, the longing, as well as the dissatisfaction that comes with young love. And that's really why people read these books.

I was so hesitant to read this because I really did not enjoy the first to, but since my Tiktok followers blasted me for not finishing TMI, I decided to give it another go. I was pleasantly surprised and ordered the next one. In all honesty, I am just trying to get through these so I can read TID.
Wow this was great! The scene at the faery court is one of my favorites in City of Ashes and it's really interesting to read it from Jace's POV. Highly recommended.
