The characters in the book are all intensely flawed and I can’t tell if that’s intentional or not. Bad traits such as adultery are celebrated and rewarded, constantly, which I find hard. “Bad” characters are portrayed as caricatures of themselves (which is fine), but the author uses physical descriptions to make characters’ personality flaws more obvious. She uses descriptions of people being “fat” quite often as a shameful thing to be laughed at, and celebrates more than once people losing weight. She dismisses and laughs at beauty treatments, particularly those used by wealthy characters. She also seems to celebrate female characters remaining in or beginning relationships with unkind or abusive men. Not for me, I’m afraid. I actually wondered if the whole book was a joke about the genre of romantic literature.

Heerlijk romantisch over de top verhaal. Iedereen is knap en verliefd wordt iedereen in het boek na een ontmoeting al. Had even een wat luchtig boek nodig en dat is dit zeker.

I thought this was another brilliant book from Erica James. Full of characters that you either love or hate. The story isn't as predictable as some chick lits are which is refreshing.

I’d originally picked up Promises, Promises in October, and didn’t get through more than 30 pages before other things came between us. I finally picked it up again, because I wanted to know what happens.

drey’s thoughts:

Two women’s stories are told in Promises, Promises. Ella, whose heart was broken by a man who couldn’t stand up to his daughter’s sabotaging their relationship. Maggie, who’s tired of being the doormat everyone walks on – including her husband and son.

Ella has moved on from that fiasco, and is happy enough living her life and doing her job. Then she meets Ethan, husband to one of her more difficult clients, and somehow life becomes more complicated again. Not that she’s having an affair with him, mind you – he only wants to be friends, mostly because that’s all she will accept. But when her ex-boyfriend unexpectedly shows up wanting to reconcile, her friendship with Ethan is a complication.

Maggie is tired of difficult spouses and difficult clients, but she really doesn’t have many options. Until events spiral out of proportion and she meets someone who’s worth putting first – herself. Both women are pulled in directions they’re not sure they want to head in – and for Maggie, directions she’s starting to realize are in complete opposite to what she wants. Both have to come to terms with the life they have and the life they want. And Ethan does, too, which is something he didn’t realize before meeting Ella.

I like the main characters in Promises, Promises, and didn’t care so much for those around them. Ethan’s surrounded by nasty people – including his wife and daughter. Ella’s exboyfriend is a dud who waited way longer than he should have to make amends (or attempt to). And Maggie. *shudder* If I knew people like those in Maggie’s life, I’d move to Timbuktu. Not that everyone was horrible. But they’re not the focus of the story.

Promises, Promises is a story that reminds us it’s ok to take our own happiness into consideration. And thank our lucky stars if our lives aren’t like Maggie’s.

drey’s rating: Pick it up!

I liked it for a light read. Very predictable but a good light read if you like chick lit.
