From the muddy days of early spring through moonlit autumn nights, a little girl and her Nana plant, tend and enjoy their garden. Insects and animals do their part, too, stirring the soil, eating pests and pollinating plants. Kate Messner's vivid descriptions of cool, crumbly earth, hot sun, and summer breezes will have readers itching to get their hands dirty.

I'm so glad to see more of these books by Kate Messner. It's a perfect continuation of Over and Under the Snow, although in a setting I much prefer, spring and summer! I love how Messner shows what happens in a garden and how it changes through the seasons.

Great information about gardens, soil, planting, and seasons, this reads as a fiction book but is full of information for little ones. It also has beautiful language, lots of alliteration, and great rhythm. I read it aloud to eight preschoolers, holding all their attention, and will use it with my STEM "Down and Dirty" (soils) summer camp at the library.

I've only recently gotten into gardening after getting a house with my family. I'd love to think that I will be able to use my garden to teach some of the lessons that the grandmother in this story teaches her granddaughter. More people need to become aware of how the earth works and the way that we can work with it, and books like this can help encourage those connections.

A lovely book that shows a girl and her Nana planting a garden and following it through the different seasons. It shows what they see above the dirt and also what is going on under the dirt. Roots, worms, insects, and animals hibernating in the dirt. It mentions how things grow and many different bugs and flowers. A wonderful way to teach little ones about nature or get them interested in gardening.
